    HISTORY
-Purchased new in October1966, this GTO was my daily driver for the 1st 7 years. With an expanding career and growing family, I had to move to a more suitable family car. The GTO was then retired to the garage for the next 39+ years with very limited driving time.
-Although the GTO was covered and out of heat & cold, sunlight and rain, the affects of time begin to show before long. In 2012 I decided to rebuild rather than sell with a goal to bring the GOAT back to it's "as purchased condition" - not a "high end show car". I would handle the majority of the labor intensive task, with local restoration specialist taking on the heavy work. Taking longer than I planned (as it always does), the successful restoration was completed in late 2018.
    Restoration Details
The engine and transmission were removed from the car and carried to their respective shops for rebuild.
-The engine was bored 30 over with the crank cleaning up at 10 under. A new 360 Hp, GM 068 grind camshaft and new hydraulic lifters were installed as a OEM performance upgrade. This cam has a slightly more aggressive idle compared to the original 335 Hp 067 grind cam.
-A PERTRONIX II, rev-limiter electronic ignition system replaced the conventional points and condenser system. The rev-limit is currently set for approximately 4500 rpm.
-The original Rochester Quadrajet carburetor was rebuilt with all stock components.
-The transmission was found to be in good condition with only normal wear. Therefore the trannny rebuild included replacement of all seals, wear plates and disc components.
-With the engine and transmission out for rebuild, every removable component in the engine bay area was removed and refurbished. All painted parts were cleaned, degreased, coated with rust preventative and repainted. Plated and chromed parts were cleaned and polished.
-The frame forward of the firewall was degreased, cleaned and painted. The firewall itself was NOT blocked out and painted as you often see with many restorations. In this case, I only repainted the firewall lower section leaving the factory original overspray along the top.
-Reworked/replaced steering and suspension components included the installation of new A-frame bushings, ball joints, spindle/hub bearings & seals, new tie rods & cross link, torsion bar rubber inserts & shocks x4.
-Brake x4 rework included degreasing & painting all brake system components, installing new pads, rubber hoses & reworked wheel cylinders. All removed steel brake lines and the proportioning valve were flushed and bronze wool cleaned before being reinstalled. The rear center splitter brake hose was also replaced.
-The original brake master cylinder was retained to preserve authenticity; painted and reworked with new internal parts.
-Other engine and/or mechanical items include the installation of a new OEM style cross flow radiator, a new gas tank and sending unit. Additionally, the rear end was inspected, bearings and seals replaced as well as new driveshaft u-joints.
All exterior chrome/stainless steel trim was removed and hand restored with no rechroming required. The only trim component replaced* was the pitted chrome Pontiac hood ornament. The bumpers are in excellent condition, considering their age, and were cleaned with 0000 bronze wool before polishing.
*see vent window frame replacements below.
-The original Signet Gold color was retained with the application of a new PPG clear coat paint system. The original black vinyl top was replaced with an authentic factory correct seamed black vinyl top.
-The front grill black bezel was replaced due to age cracking. The original parking/turn signal light fixtures were refurbished with new lens and original type yellow coated bulbs.
-All door and window weatherstripping, glass felt tracks, rubber components & seals were replaced. Each door and window operator mechanism was removed, checked for wear, adjusted as needed and lubricated before being reinstalled. Due to chrome pitting of the vent window frames*, these were replaced including new rubber tracks & seals.
-The windshield was replaced eliminating several "bullseye" and numerous chips accumulated over the years.
-Due to time related wear & tear, a new correct loop pile carpet was installed. The balance of the interior remains original.
-For improved safety, an aftermarket front shoulder restraint system was added using factory installed roof attachment brackets.
-The AC system is 100% new including compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion valve, dryer and hoses operating with 134a freon. The cooling system controls were upgraded to provide a more efficient compressor recycling operation vs the original compressor bypass. The complete air handling/heater core system was removed from under the dash/firewall and refurbished. All vacuum operated diaphragms were replaced as were gaskets and seals and a new heater core also installed. The fan speed switch, AC firewall relay and AC wiring harness were replaced.
Finally, the trunk interior was repainted with the original black/turquoise speckled paint system. New weatherstripping was applied for the trunk lid. The original tail light assemblies were refurbished, the trunk side repainted as original and OEM style foam rubber gaskets were used with installation.
-Currently one of the original (1966) Firestone Wide Oval, Red Line, F70x14, original equipment tires that came with the GTO is in the trunk spare position. This 56 year old tire still holds air and has approximately 40% of the original tread remaining. Under this tire, in its correct position, is the original jack & lug wrench secured with the original rubber tube holder for the two pieces.
    Opportunities/Past Issues
With any 50+ year old car, there will be aging deterioration and minor issues to deal with. To the best of my knowledge, there are no current issues with this GTO other than the few described below.
-Small paint chip on the right lip of the trunk opening.
-In 1980 rust was found and repaired in the windshield lower right corner, rear window corners and tail light openings. No further issues for the last 41 years.
-A new headliner would likely improve a judging score.
-The emergency flasher selector end cover is missing.
-Restoration repaired an earlier rr quarter panel parking lot scrape.
-Driver seat bottom pleat separation is unnoticeable.
