    Description
    1967 Pontiac GTO
The Pontiac GTO became known as "The Goat" due to an interpretation of the letters that make up its name. Figuratively speaking, the car's "defiant, stripped-to-the-basics personality" also had a hand in cementing the moniker, according to Edmunds.com. It is speculated that the acronym GTO, which stands for Gran Turismo Omologato, was taken from the Ferrari 250 GTO. American consumers have a history of shortening the names of cars with multiple syllables, and this likely influenced the nickname of this Pontiac brand. "The Goat" is catchy, easy to remember and was essentially born out of convenience.
We often say here at Classic Auto Mall you never know what is going to show up at the door on a daily basis, and when this beauty arrived, we all just smiled, and pushed each other out of the way to do our test track drive! A mere 92,845 title verified original miles, unrestored and unmolested, loaded with factory options, an original drivetrain car, tons of documentation including the window sticker, build sheet, PHS documentation, Protect-O-Plate, and factory A/C. This "goat" surely is a sight to behold!
    Exterior
This writer's favorite version of the venerable GTO the Pontiac division got it all right this year. Stacked dual headlights framed with pristine mirror-like bezels flank a woven wire chromed grille with signal lights and GTO badging, and a lower bumper in very good original condition. Looking down the line towards the rear we can see only straight steel, well minded factory gaps, and miles of Mariner Turquoise paint covering broken up by a white pinstripe, and a lower stainless rocker cover again with the GTO badge up front next to the wheel well. The paint is the factory applied coating and does present with some cracking, stone chips, scratches and dings but overall is remaining nice for a 55 year old paint job. A dinged in header panel leads to long straight scooped hood with dealer-installed hood pins backed up to clean glass all around, all framed by shiny polished trim. This trim does a very nice job of highlighting the black vinyl roof which shows with no tears or evidence of rust bubbling underneath and you've gotta love those flying buttress B pillars that frame the rear glass deep set within them. Moving to the back a long laser straight trunk lid curves downward to the foursome of horizontal thin rear tail light clusters, and more gorgeous framing of chromed trim and a snappy rear bumper. Lest we forget the factory installed and highly sought-after option code 522 red fender liners that are rarely seen as few were ordered and very few have survived in original condition and the not oft seen factory power antenna. 14-inch Pontiac Rally 1 wheels are all around and sport BFG raised white letter radial rubber. This goat oozes with originality!
    Interior
You can take this interior to the bank in black...the vinyl is just beautifully preserved and original. Door panels with their inset GTO badges, front buckets and rear bench are the exact parts this Pontiac was assembled with and show well thanks to years of care and proper preservation. We note the optional headrests and even the option code 578 reclining passenger's bucket seat. A wood appliqu covers the center console which races through the front buckets making room for the factory Hurst shifter and goes forward hiding under the original dash. More perfect wood appliqu for the gauge cluster, and center panel which houses the airflow levers and the original AM/FM radio. To add more excitement, the original custom sport steering wheel is fronting this all original dash. Topping off the dash is the original crack free pad and in front of the passenger is the obligatory Jesus bar, GTO badge and glove box. Factory black carpet floods the floors and presents with only minor fading and wear while a black headliner floats perfectly above all this as from the factory interior beauty.
    Drivetrain
A lift of the hood, and we are being stared at with the steely blue gaze of the factory installed engine block and intake manifold, and its chromed valve covers. An original to this car WT stamped 400ci V8 pumping out 335 horses, is topped by #670 heads and a 4-barrel Rochester Quadrajet carb. This mill sits in an unrestored engine bay that is correct right now to the chalk marks on the fire wall. Bolted to the back is the original Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission (stamping P7A26) and bringing up the rear is the window sticker specified 10-bolt 3.23 Safe-T-Track axle. It just doesn't get much more original than this.
    Undercarriage
Up on our lift we literally could turn this car upside down and run it around and everyone would be just as impressed by the amount of originality here. No rust is seen, just miles of patined factory undercoating covering the strong steel frame and floors. Independent coil spring suspension is on the front and a 4 link with coil springs brings up the rear. Power front disc brakes were optioned onto this Goat and they work in conjunction with rear power drums to bring all the ponies to a halt. Dual exhaust with stock style mufflers snakes its way to the rear of the car and we note factory Wonder Touch power steering. Lookin good and just the way I like it.
    Drive-Ability
As mentioned, myself and my decoder/muscle car expert/all around good guy were clamoring to take it for a test and it certainly did not disappoint. It's not often we get to drive a fully original unrestored piece of muscle car history, so this was a rare treat of a drive. The Goat handled our test track with ease on all fronts with excellent acceleration, straight bias free braking and good handling for a car from the 60's. Only 2 frowns crept up during our test track tour, those being the windshield wipers wouldn't wipe and the heater blower refused to blow. All in all, a great drive was had and it was pure pleasure to get to experience how these boulevard bruisers really worked.
A true highlight with all its originality and if you are even a lukewarm fan of the GTO a must see when visiting the ever-changing halls of the expansive and very impressive Classic Auto Mall. Wearing its original paint, original interior, and original drivetrain it's hard to ask for much more....oh wait....all that documentation is the icing on the cake. Don't dally, unrestored and unmolested GTO's don't come along every day!
